What motivated you to run for the school board?

I dedicated the final six years of my 20-year law enforcement career to serving District 7, where the safety and well-being of staff and students became my top priority. This role sparked a deep passion and appreciation for the district. During this time, I had the privilege of working alongside three different superintendents, numerous administrators, and witnessing the district’s evolution and shifting priorities firsthand. Even after retiring, I felt a strong desire to continue contributing to the school district and our community. Like many parents, I have concerns about the quality of education my child receives, the district's safety, and its overall direction. I’m running for the school board to deepen my understanding of the district, share my experience and values, and advocate for the community’s interests.

How do you plan to address the diverse needs of students in our district?

Addressing the diverse needs of students in our district requires a thoughtful re-evaluation of teaching materials to ensure they align with and support the varied learning styles and needs of our students. It’s essential to provide resources that reflect cultural relevance, inclusivity, and adaptability for all learners. Additionally, supporting ongoing professional development for teachers is critical. By equipping educators with exposure to innovative teaching methods and strategies, we can better reach the diverse learning styles within our student population, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive academically and personally.

What are your priorities for improving academic achievement in the district?

Improving academic achievement in our district starts with investing in our teachers and enhancing teacher quality. By providing ongoing professional development, mentorship, and resources, we can empower educators to deliver effective and engaging instruction. It’s also crucial to identify areas where we fall short compared to neighboring districts and use that insight to create focused strategies. Structured lesson plans aligned with state standards can help address these deficiencies systematically, ensuring all students have the tools and support they need to succeed. By prioritizing these efforts, we can elevate academic performance and set a strong foundation for long-term success.

How do you plan to support teachers and staff in our schools?

Supporting teachers and staff in our schools begins with actively listening to their needs and ensuring they have the tools required to meet the expectations set by the Superintendent. The school board must maintain open communication and foster a culture where educators feel valued and heard. I propose implementing a grassroots survey to give teachers a platform to share their perspectives on both the positive and negative impacts of current decisions on their classrooms. This feedback would guide policies and resource allocation, ultimately empowering teachers to lead successful, effective classrooms and create a stronger educational environment for our students.

What is your position on the district’s budget and how will you ensure financial responsibility?

My position on the district’s budget is that board members must actively review and monitor finances while adhering to established accounting standards to ensure transparency and accountability. Regular assessments of the district’s operations are crucial for identifying potential issues and creating a budget that accurately reflects our priorities and needs. Additionally, I believe in exploring potential outsourcing options for certain basic services, which could optimize resources and allow us to focus more funding on critical areas such as student achievement, teacher support, and facility improvements. By maintaining fiscal responsibility, we can better serve the district’s long-term goals.

How do you plan to engage with parents and the community in decision-making processes?

Engaging with parents and the community in the decision-making process requires greater transparency from school board members. While the board must function as a unified body, it’s equally important for individual members to have the opportunity to share their perspectives and concerns openly with the public. By allowing these discussions to go beyond a simple yes or no vote, we can foster a deeper understanding of differing opinions and encourage more robust community involvement. This approach promotes trust, inclusivity, and collaboration, ensuring that the voices of parents and community members are heard and considered in shaping the district's future.

What are your views on integrating technology and preparing students for future careers?

Integrating technology into our schools is vital for preparing students for future careers, but it must be approached thoughtfully and strategically. Technology should be introduced gradually throughout a student’s academic journey, complementing traditional instruction rather than replacing it. This ensures a balanced education that combines critical thinking and digital skills. The focus should be on maintaining relevant, up-to-date technology education that aligns with industry standards, enabling graduates to seamlessly transition into the workforce or higher education. By fostering adaptability and proficiency in evolving tools and platforms, we can ensure students are equipped to thrive in a modern, technology-driven environment. My commitment is to prioritize resources and training that align with these goals, ensuring every student is prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future workforce.

How will you handle disagreements or differing opinions on the board?

As a retired police officer, I’m well-versed in managing conflict and navigating differing opinions. The key is active listening and making a genuine effort to understand opposing viewpoints. By fostering open dialogue and seeking common ground, disagreements can become opportunities for growth and better decision-making. Respect and courtesy should be the foundation of all interactions, whether with fellow board members, administrators, or members of the public. Maintaining a professional and collaborative approach ensures that, even in the face of differing opinions, we can work together effectively to prioritize the needs of our students and the community.

What are your plans to ensure school safety and the well-being of students?

As a board member with extensive knowledge in school safety, I am committed to prioritizing the well-being and security of our students. I will work diligently to ensure that the district's safety manuals are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the latest best practices. I will also ensure that all safety processes and procedures not only comply with but exceed state laws and regulations. Furthermore, I will advocate for comprehensive training and the provision of adequate resources for our teachers and staff, empowering them to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.

How do you balance state and federal education mandates with local needs?

Balancing state and federal education mandates with local needs requires a thoughtful approach that aligns broad objectives with the unique priorities of our community. While state and federal mandates provide a valuable road map for success, they do not prescribe the specific path to achieve these goals. Our district must focus on identifying and addressing local needs by analyzing data, monitoring academic performance, and actively listening to the concerns of our staff and community. By tailoring our strategies to reflect these insights, we can ensure that the goals set by higher authorities are met in a way that best serves our students and schools.
